6 Crazy Nirvana Stories

6 Crazy Nirvana Stories

Nirvana is one of the all-time greatest bands in the history of music. However, the band is not without their wild stories. All bands at some point have an eccentric experience to tell. Here are 6 crazy Nirvana stories.

Nearly Ran Into Wild Alligators

Before becoming one of the biggest bands in the world, they were really roughing it and saving as much money as possible staying in their van instead of a hotel. Kurt Cobain recalls a story where they parked their van near a lake where there beware signs of alligators. They tried to catch as much sleep as possible but kept caution and were prepared with baseball bats. In the middle of the night, they thought they saw a gator so they took off.

Kicked Out of the Nevermind Release Party

Yes, kicked out of their own party. Apparently, Cobain started throwing dip at people, which turned into a full-fledged food fight. They were then asked to leave the party.

David Grohl Taught Kurt Cobain How to Give Himself a Tattoo

While this is not too crazy as far as rock bands are concerned, the story is a bit funny. Grohl has a background in special effects but things got a little complicated when he tried to teach Cobain how to do his own tattoo. The thread unraveled and he ended up getting ink all over his arm. Quite a messy situation, right?

Kurt Cobain Set a Club’s Couch on Fire

Before one of their mega-hits, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” blasted them into stardom, they were performing at a small club in Pittsburgh called Graffiti. The concert promoter got into an argument with Krist Novoselic’s girlfriend/crewmember over her apparently cheating the club out of the profits of t-shirt sales. To break the tension, Cobain lit a couch on fire. The damage wasn’t bad and no one got hurt, but Nirvana’s road manager was arrested.

Nirvana Smashed A Drum Kit So The Record Label Would Buy a New One

It’s not uncommon for Nirvana to destroy their equipment on stage. However, they really needed new equipment in their early days. They would use whatever they could find. Grohl wanted a new drum because Cobain kept putting holes in it. However, the label was moving like a snail when it came to this priority. At one point, Grohl convinced his bandmates to fully destroy the equipment so the label would have no choice but to get the new stuff. It worked and they were able to get new drums in a few days.

They Started a Riot

At any already hype show (especially since there were more fans than tickets), Nirvana did a bold move to invite them up. Before then, the tensions were high because the security team kept playing rough to the crowd. After the crowd starts running on stage, there was a big riot. It forced Grohl to save the equipment from the crazy mob.
